About

Resiliency.  This is the theme of the CATESOL 2020 State Conference.  If you’re new to CATESOL, our state conference is an annual event where educators from up and down the state and beyond come together in one place for four days to learn, collaborate, and enjoy the company of passionate colleagues.  Knowing this, you can imagine why we decided to center this year’s conference around resiliency.  We, the conference organizers, hope that this year more than any other year in CATESOL’s recent past, conference attendees walk away from the four days with renewed passion and resolve, and sharpen their skills so that they may continue to show up for their students and colleagues amidst the many obstacles that we currently face.

Language as a Vehicle for Connection and Belonging
Language as a Vehicle for Connection and Belonging
Language is culture. It is geography. Language is the means through which we find and maintain human connection. More than 71 million people worldwide are displaced from their homes and on the move. 52% of those displaced are children. As a result, so many in our society feel separate and afraid. With over 1 billion people worldwide learning English, language is the vehicle through which we may reach across differences, connect with our neighbors, bring communities together, and ensure every person knows they belong, especially in these uncertain times.

Kinesthetic Grammar Activities: Grammar on the Go
Kinesthetic Activities are, at the most basic level, activities where students use gesture, motion, and activity to practice language. Kinesthetic activities can lower the affective filter, make target language more salient and thus more memorable, and demonstrate nonverbal communication including body language and gesture. Teaching and practicing grammar this way can take it off the worksheet and into a concrete meaningful social context, helping students see how language functions as a communication tool. And yes, they can be done online! Participants will experience several kinesthetic activities such as Pirate Island to practice articles and Advice Alley to practice modal verbs.

Preparing Future ESL/EFL Teachers: From Theory to Practice
Preparing Future ESL/EFL Teachers: From Theory to Practice
Current thinking in ESL/EFL teacher preparation supports the notion that theory-to-practice should be a strong component of any language teacher preparation program (Jumani, 2012). In this session, three teacher educators describe MA in TESOL student projects that address the theory-to-practice gap observed in language teacher preparation around the world. Three of the projects described in this session include: 1) low-tech online modules for a community-based ESL program; 2) content-based instruction units taught by ESL teachers in sheltered high school social studies and college credit ESL classes; and 3) language tests created to place and assess the progress of ESL learners.

Revitalizing Student Voices: Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in the Literacy Classroom
Revitalizing Student Voices: Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in the Literacy Classroom
In an increasingly complex and diverse world, serving students requires that we do more than simply offer cultural responsiveness and inclusivity; our pedagogies must sustain, honor, and nurture the dynamic practices, voices, and literacies of culturally and linguistically diverse youth. In this session, we will examine the idea of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy-how it asks that we think about, relate to, and engage with historically marginalized youth and communities-and consider particular examples of literacy practices that advance this critical shift in praxis, and illuminate how CSP can live in the daily life of the classroom.

How to Organize Short Student Presentations in a Virtual Classroom
How to Organize Short Student Presentations in a Virtual Classroom
Shifting classrooms online runs the risk of their becoming overly teacher-centered when not in Breakout Rooms. One way to put student-led production and interaction at the center of Zoom meetings is to organize class-wide short individual presentations. Key to their success is (a) the selection of content that generates student enthusiasm for participation and (b) the organizational framework of the assignment on Canvas for appropriate student submissions. This teaching tip demonstrates with examples how a podcast and a film served as the basis of multiple Canvas assignments linked to Google Slides culminating in very successful individual student presentations on Zoom.

The Why and How of Using Multicultural Children's Literature
The Why and How of Using Multicultural Children's Literature

Developing learner literacy and cross-cultural awareness can be achieved by incorporating multicultural children's literature (MCL) in the classroom. MCL 'helps children identify with their own culture [and] exposes children to other cultures' (Coby & Lyon, 2004). To facilitate multicultural experiences, teachers can utilize students' L1 cultures to bridge understanding and develop a framework for examining other cultures.  In this poster session, we present our experiences as teacher trainers in South Korea on using multiculturalism children's literature. By exploring nontraditional populations in English literature in our trainings, we observed an increase in teacher understanding of multiculturalism.

The Language of Power: Interrogating Cultural Chauvinism in TESOL
Earlier this year, a discussion on the CATESOL list-serve spawned discussion about the act of asking a student to Anglicize a non-English name. The thread from the discussion revealed, among many things, a clear need for interrogation of assumptions that may be widely held in the field of TESOL. Can the teaching of English be divorced from the imperialism and white-centeredness of the language's history? Questions raised about the maintenance and perpetuation of cultural chauvinism in TESOL will be discussed.

Challenges of Online Teaching: Technologically Mindful Critical Teacher Reflection
Online teaching offers several ways to augment critical teacher reflection. On the one hand, online classes provide teachers with regular access to audio/video recordings of their classroom to help them critically reflect on their knowing-in-action and reflection-in-action (Schön, 1992). On the other hand, online teaching has demonstrated the need to expand the scope of this reflection by considering digital and technological equity for students from different backgrounds. This poster session presents a technologically mindful typology to support teachers in improving their critical reflective practice as it relates to creating a more equitable and inclusive online learning environment.

A theory-based workshop framework, worksheets, and sample activities used in the workshop will be shared, and feedback from workshop attendees and their writing samples will also be described to discuss the effectiveness of the workshop. Presentation attendees will share their concerns and issues as well as discussing adaptability of the workshop framework and activities.
