NFPA Wildfire Division

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has worked on wildfire safety issues, starting with its codes and standards, since 1935. Since the mid-1980s, NFPA has developed programs in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service, state forestry agencies, and others to educate the public and engage people in action at the home and community level.

Due to the enormous increase in development in America’s wildfire-prone regions, and to the impacts of climate change, wildfire disasters have emerged as one of the most significant fire problems of the modern era. NFPA has responded by expanding its wildfire risk reduction work through the following strategies:

· Calling for policy changes through the Outthink Wildfire™ initiative

· Streamlining and consolidating codes and standards related to wildfire-resistant construction and firefighter safety

· Engaging community residents in their own safety through the Firewise USA® recognition program

· Expanding public education and service opportunities through the Wildfire Community Preparedness Day campaign

· Developing professional training and certification for wildfire mitigation specialists
