Hello and welcome to the 8th Patient-Centered Approach to Clinical Trials Conference!
Our theme this year is: How Are We Advancing Cancer Clinical Trials in Canada?
This seminal pan-cancer conference continues to inform clinical trial networks, researchers, industry, and academic trial sponsors, HTA agencies, Health Canada, and national and international cancer patient groups to mention a few. Also, we highlight the work we do through our patient centered approach to cancer clinical trials working group (PACT).
Our objectives for this year’s Conference include the following:
- To showcase Canada as fertile ground for Clinical Trials
- To educate and update on the good work and investments underway that will accelerate the clinical trial landscape in Canada over the next 2 to 3 years
- To discuss where we are winning/advancing in Canada and where/what are the key barriers that must be addressed
Our goal is to define a five-year framework and collaboration model for patient-centric trials in Canada.

Barry Stein
President - CEO Colorectal Cancer Canada
Mr. Barry D. Stein, B.Com., B.C.L., LL.B., graduated from McGill University. An accomplished lawyer, he has been a member of the Bar of Quebec since 1981. Barry sits on the Board of Directors of several corporations, not-for-profit organizations and foundations. He is the president of the Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec and a founding member of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer National Colorectal Cancer Screening Network.
As the president of Colorectal Cancer Canada, Barry represents the interests of cancer patients and speaks regularly to medical professionals, industry, government, and patient groups both in and outside of Canada. Barry has been a key advocate for population-based colorectal cancer screening initiatives, patient and physician education and multidisciplinary health professional consensus guidelines to improve patient outcomes across Canada.
As a survivor of metastatic colorectal cancer diagnosed in 1995, Barry was obliged to seek health care outside of Canada to fight the disease. His judgement, obtained in the Superior Court of Quebec, serves as a leading precedent for the reimbursement of out of country health care.
Dr. Michael Duong
Head of Innovation, Hoffmann-La Roche
Michael is the Head of Innovation for Hoffmann-La Roche Limited across all of its Canadian divisions, including Roche Pharmaceuticals, Roche Diagnostics, and Roche Diabetes Care. Michael also leads the Roche Innovation Hive – which is the creative space where the future of healthcare is being imagined and co-created between Roche and its external partners. Michael is also a founding board member of the Canadian Personalized Healthcare Innovation Network (CPHIN) which is a not for profit corporation representing a consortium of members from both public and private sectors focused on the acceleration of personalized healthcare for Canada.
Michael received his undergraduate degree in Biology and Pharmacology and a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences with a specialization in Neuroscience, both from McMaster University.

Dr. Rebecca Auer
Executive VP, Research & Innovation, The Ottawa Hospital, CEO & Scientific Director, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute
Dr. Rebecca Auer is the Executive Vice-President of Research and Innovation at The Ottawa Hospital and the CEO and Scientific Director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, where she also holds the position of cancer surgeon and Senior Scientist in the Cancer Research Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and Professor in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Auer is an international leader in perioperative cancer therapeutics. She has led six clinical trials of cancer immunotherapies based on preclinical discoveries made in her research lab. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and received over $30 million dollars in peer-reviewed funding to support her work.
Dr. Auer believes that research IS care and is dedicated to ensuring all patients are provided an opportunity to participate in research. As the co-founder of the Canadian Cholangiocarcinoma Collaborative (C3) which aims provide hope to Canadian patients with biliary tract cancers by integrating research into care. Dr, Auer is a strong advocate for supporting patient engagement and access to research at all levels of government.
Dr. Stephanie Michaud

Dr. Stephanie Michaud, PhD - President and CEO of BioCanRxDr. Stephanie Michaud is the President and CEO of BioCanRx, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to accelerate the delivery of innovative immunotherapies from the bench to the bedside. In this position, Stephanie is responsible for running all facets of the organization. She brings over 20 years of public, government and private sector experience in research and S&T innovation policy. She strives to create partnerships between government, not-for-profits, academia and industry to maximize the impact of research funded by the BioCanRx network on the lives of those affected by cancer. This includes the creations of new opportunities to include the patient voice as equal partner in the BioCanRx research program. Prior to joining BioCanRx, Stephanie was Deputy Director of the flagship Government of Canada Network Centres of Excellence (NCE) program. She is a strong contributor to S&T policy, most notably in intellectual property. Dr. Michaud earned a PhD in Organic Chemistry from McGill University. She is involved with a number of not-for-profit organizations including as Director of the Board of the StemCell Network and Research Canada.
Stephen Sundquist
Executive Director, 3CTN
Stephen has over 25 years of experience in clinical trial operations and health programs’ leadership. His clinical research expertise includes roles in pharma, CRO and academic settings involving the conduct of Phase 1-3b drug, biologic, and device trials across a wide range of therapeutic areas. The Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Network (3CTN) maintains a Portfolio of over 800 multi-centre academic cancer clinical trials and mobilizes and supports a pan-Canadian community of over 250 investigators, clinical research professionals and patient partners across its 60 pediatric- and adult-member Cancer Centres in improving shared aims for equitable access, accrual and the efficient, high-quality conduct of trials.

Element Strategy is a strategic management consulting firm providing services to the healthcare industry where transformation through person and patient focused innovation is critical to success. Our core expertise is in the leadership and facilitation of planning and innovation initiatives and thought leadership projects including roundtables and conferences. Founded in 1997, Anne Marie Wright has led Elements Strategy in select time periods while also engaged in full time roles as a senior healthcare executive in private, public and not for profit organizations. She has served clients across many sectors including the Pharmaceutical and MedTech industries, Retail Pharmacy, Healthcare Professional Associations and Venture Capital Firms. She works collaboratively and in partnership with many Advisory groups and is a member of the International Association of Facilitators. Since 2017, Elements Strategy has been a strategic advisor to Colorectal Cancer Canada, instrumental in the development of both colorectal cancer and pan cancer initiatives, bringing together multiple stakeholders for improved collaboration and efficiencies. Today, Elements Strategy also educates and advises organizations on the power of population aging and the new longevity economy. She is an advisor on AGE-WELL NCE’s National Aging Policy and Strategy working group and a member of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging Advisory Council.

Adam Buffone

Health Canada
Adam Buffone is the Associate Director of the Office of Clinical Trials at Health Canada’s Pharmaceutical Drugs Division. With a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa, Adam has over 15 years of experience at Health Canada, including roles such as working in the Vaccine Quality Labs, Senior Clinical Evaluator in the Office of Clinical Trials for both biologics and pharmaceutical drugs, and Senior Regulatory Affairs Officer. His work has contributed to the modernization of clinical trial regulations. Previously, Adam managed the Medical Officer Group and the Biologist Section within the Office of Clinical Trials in the Pharmaceutical Drugs Division. In his current position, he oversees clinical trial reviews, serves as the Deputy Topic Lead for Canada on ICH M11, and contributes to the Special Access Program. Adam will be presenting on behalf of Health Canada, sharing insights and advancements in the field of clinical trials.
Andrew Spanyi
Caregiver to his wife, Katalin, as she fought metastatic cancer.
Andrew was a caregiver for his wife (Katalin) as she fought metastatic cancer from 2016 through 2023. For over three decades, he has worked at the intersection of customer experience and process improvement. Andrew has written three books: More for Less: The Power of Process Management and Business Process Management is a Team Sport: Play It to Win! and Operational Leadership. He has worked on over 170 process improvement projects. Andrew has delivered keynote speeches at conferences in North America, Europe and Australia. His work on process improvement is recognized internationally.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) and earned his MBA [Marketing/Finance] from York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is an advisor to the Association of Business Process Management Professionals (ABPMP).
Bruno Lemire
Medical Lead for the Oncology Pipeline, GSK
Bruno Lemire is a Medical Affair professional with over a decade of experience in leadership roles within the pharmaceutical industry, currently serving as the Medical Lead for the Oncology Pipeline at GSK. He has led high-performing teams at GSK and Novartis, driving clinical trial footprint and enhancing scientific awareness through strategic initiatives. Bruno received his PhD in Experimental Medicine from Université Laval, his master’s from the University of Ottawa and his bachelor's degree from McGill University.
Dr. Armstrong Murira
Co-Founder & CEO, Simmunome
Armstrong is a molecular biologist with a PhD focused on bioinformatics and computational biology in HIV, a specialization that allowed him to contribute to significant research during his postdoctoral studies, particularly within Hepatitis C. This academic foundation gave him a profound appreciation for the intricacies of biological research and the potential for technological interventions. Transitioning from academia to the pharmaceutical industry, Armstrong immersed himself in an array of roles. His diverse experiences spanned from business analytics and development to specialized work in machine learning (ML), specifically within clinical R&D in global pharmaceutical companies in the Fortune 500. Each role provided him with valuable insights into the multifaceted nature of the industry. His interests range from basic, foundational research to clinical drug development. The fusion of these experiences led Armstrong to co-found Simmunome, where he currently serves as CEO. At Simmunome, he is leveraging his background in ML and bioinformatics, diving deep into biological complexities to find innovative solutions to challenges in biological and clinical R&D. Armstrong finds the work at Simmunome incredibly rewarding and is excited to see where the team’s continued research and exploration will lead.
Dr. Jean Bourbeau
CANTRAIN Independent Researcher & Mentor, Senior Scientist in the Translational Research Program in Respiratory Diseases at the RI-MUHC
Dr J Bourbeau is a clinician scientist, professor and full-time researcher at McGill University, trained as Respirologist and in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University, and Senior Scientist, Center of Outcome Research and Evaluation (CORE), Research Institute McGill University Health Centre (RIMUHC). He is Fellow of the Canadian Academic of Health Science (FCAHS), “Distinguished Scientist Award”, McGill University (2020-2025), “CIHR-ICRH/CTS Distinguished Lecturer Award in Respiratory Sciences (2024)”
Recognized as a world researcher and leader in COPD with over 400 publications, he currently serves on various international/national COPD scientific committees (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), Chest, ATS and CTS). Past President and currently on the board of the CTS. Research, mainly clinical and epidemiological in the field of COPD, including the Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD), and the self-management program Living Well with COPD (LWWCOPD), that have had impact in clinical practice and patient education.
Principal investigators of many clinical trials, worthy of note: past achievement: landmark multicentre RCTs of COPD non-pharmacological interventions (Self-management/FRQS, home rehabilitation/CIHR, COMET, PHYSACTO industry funded/investigator initiated); current achievement: drug (fentanyl S/L) and device (OPEP) RCTs (cross over design) for refractory dyspnea in COPD (CIHR funding), and home rehab-lung COVID RCT (CIHR finding).
Nominated principal investigator, CIHR Clinical Training Trial Platform, the CANadian consortium of the clinical trial TRAINing platform (CANTRAIN), 11.3 M$ (2022-2025). Also, co-chair of the training committee, and chair of the new Clinical Trial Network “Chronic Airway Disease Clinical Trial Network” as part of the Accelerating Controlled Trials (ACT) Consortium CIHR (2022-26).
Dr. Joanna Gotfrit
The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, University of Ottawa
Dr. Joanna Gotfrit is a Medical Oncologist at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre and an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa. She specializes in Gastro-Intestinal and Head & Neck cancers. She received her MD from McMaster University and completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology at the University of Ottawa, followed by a fellowship in Gastro-Intestinal Oncology, and a Master’s of Health Management at McMaster University. Her research focus is in health systems and health policy. She is the chairperson for the Ontario Medical Association executive section on Hematology and Medical Oncology. She is also involved on multiple hospital committees, and in teaching and medical education.
Dr. Jonathan Hooper
Pancreatic cancer patient and Sindy's husband
We are Sindy and Jon Hooper were both born and raised in Ottawa, and both attended Ottawa University. We met in 2001 and have been together since, with Sindy’s 2 sons.
Sindy’s career was in health care management. She was passionate about running and triathlon and spent many years racing around the world doing marathons, Ironmans and half ironmans. In 2013 Sindy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and extremely fortunate to have whipples surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Sindy was cancer free for 9 years. During that time she used running and triathlon to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, hope for other survivors, and has raised $500,000 for pancreatic cancer research.
She had a metastasis to her left lung in 2021 and surgery to remove it. Unfortunately, a year later, in September 2022 she had metastasis to her left lung pleura, a rib and spine and a prognosis of one year to live. More chemotherapy and radiation. She developed a large pleural effusion in September 2023, a Pleurex catheter inserted, a new prognosis of 6 months to live, and onto a clinical trial in December.
Jon’s career was medicine. He trained in Ottawa, Newfoundland and Halifax. He has been an Intensive Care physician and an Anesthesiologist at the Ottawa Hospital since 1992. He has spent many months in developing countries teaching and providing health care. He is also passionate about running and triathlon. He has been the Medical Director for Ottawa Race weekend for over 30 years.
We’ve been travelling back and forth to Fairfax, Virginia for a clinical trial since January 2024.
Dr. P.J. Devereaux
Accelerating Clinical Trials (ACT) Operating Committee Co-Chair, & Senior Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences
Dr. Devereaux is a cardiologist, perioperative care physician, and clinical epidemiologist. He is the Director of the Division of Perioperative Care at McMaster University. He is a Senior Scientist and the Scientific Leader of the Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, and Surgical Research Group at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI). He is the Nominated Principal Applicant of the Accelerating Clinical Trials (ACT) Consortium, which is the Pan-Canadian Clinical Trials Consortium funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He also holds a Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair in Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Devereaux is a full Professor at McMaster University. He is the President of the Society of Perioperative Research and Care. Dr. Devereaux has published >450 peer reviewed papers and >90 book chapters, editorials, and commentaries, including 17 in the New England Journal of Medicine, 13 in the Lancet, and 11 in JAMA. He has an h-index of 122. He has given >1000 lectures and research presentations in 41 countries. Dr. Devereaux’s research program focuses on major vascular complications during and after surgery. He has led many large international randomized trials and prospective cohort studies focused on major perioperative vascular complications.
Dr. Stuart Edmonds
Executive VP of Mission, Research & Advocacy, Canadian Cancer Society
Stuart joined the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in February 2020 following the amalgamation with Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC). As Executive Vice President of Mission, he oversees the Research and Advocacy teams.
Prior to the amalgamation, Stuart spent 8 years at PCC as Vice President of Research, Health Promotion and Survivorship. He has held leadership roles at several national cancer research institutes and government agencies. Stuart holds a Doctorate in pharmacology from Oxford University.
Dr. Summer Starling
Dr. Summer Starling: Senior Project Manager, Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative (CTTI, Duke University)
Dr. Starling manages the development and implementation of CTTI projects and CTTI strategic operations. Along with her colleagues, she is accelerating progress towards the Transforming Trials 2030 Vision.
Dr. Starling has more than 15 years’ experience in public health. She joins CTTI from within the Duke University School of Medicine, where she led mixed methods research studies with clinical investigators at Duke to understand and improve patient experiences in clinical research. Earlier in her career, she was a senior scientist and a Ford Foundation Doctoral Fellow with the Public Health Institute in Oakland, CA, conducting research on adolescent health and decision-making. She has also worked as a consultant for Johnson & Johnson and other healthcare companies, where she led client-centered research programs and organizational change campaigns.
Dr. Starling received a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Masters in Public Health (MPH) in sociomedical sciences from Columbia University.
Judy Needham
Chair of the Patient Representatives Committee and supporting the CCTG Clinical Trials, Strategic Executive Advisory Council & Executive Committees
Judy became involved with CCTG in 2012 as a member of the Breast Cancer Disease Site Committee, moving on to become the Vice Chair and then Chair of the Patient Representatives Committee (formerly the Lay Committee) in 2014. In her role as chair, Judy has been instrumental in leading the redesign of the Patient Representative role at CCTG. Patient Representatives are now active contributors on disease site committees, identifying potential patient issues during trial design and ensuring patient-oriented endpoints and questions are included, along with the scientific questions, in CCTG clinical trials.
Judy is a seventeen-year-old breast cancer survivor and recently a caregiver for a close family member with bladder cancer. Professionally, she is retired from a corporate marketing career as Director of Campaign Planning. She chose early retirement after her cancer journey and began her long-standing volunteer work with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, organizing the first National Corporate Team for the CBCF Run for the Cure. Judy also led a project to develop patient facing materials distributed by surgeons in British Columbia that would help newly diagnosed breast cancer patients understand key junctures and decision points in their journey. These materials were subsequently taken up by for five provinces. She has a volunteer history with CCS and CCSRI in grant panels and Scientific Advisory Councils. Currently, In addition to her volunteer responsibilities with CCTG, Judy has volunteer responsibilities with 3CTN Scientific Portfolio Committee, BC Cancer Provincial Research Advisory Committee, and her local Abbotsford Cancer Centre.

Megan Bettle
Acting Associate Vice-President, Research – Strategy, Learning Health Systems Clinical Trials Canadian Institutes of Health Research
Megan Bettle joined the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in Spring 2022 as the Executive Director for Clinical Trials, where she is responsible for the implementation of the Clinical Trials Fund, and other clinical trials-related policy initiatives. Prior to joining CIHR, Megan worked in a variety of positions at Health Canada, beginning in 2005 as a drug safety reviewer, and moving onto positions in pre- and post-market drug review, cannabis policy, and surveillance of tobacco and problematic drug use. She completed a PhD and post-doctoral studies in molecular biology and the genetics of rare diseases.
Melissa Hunt
Director of the Bureau of Metabolism, Oncology and Reproductive Sciences within the Pharmaceutical Drugs Directorate, Health Canada
Melissa Hunt joined Health Canada in 2005. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences from Queen’s University and a Master of Science in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto. Prior, Melissa worked for several years within the pharmaceutical industry. At Health Canada she has been a Scientific Evaluator and a Manager in the Marketed Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau within the Marketed Health Product Directorate (MHPD), as well as a member of the core team for the Health Products and Food Branch "Regulatory Review of Drugs and Devices" initiative. Since 2018 she has held the position of Director of the Bureau of Metabolism, Oncology and Reproductive Sciences within the Pharmaceutical Drugs Directorate.
Michael Krupnick
Sr. Director of Engineering at IQVIA's Data Strategy, Access & Enablement (DSAE) Department.
Michael is the Sr. Director of Engineering at IQVIA's Data Strategy, Access & Enablement (DSAE) Department. With over 15 years of experience in product and engineering management across medical devices, health IT, EMR, mobile health, and research in the provider, medical devices and life sciences verticals, Michael has been instrumental in driving innovation and efficiency in clinical trials, real world evidence and digital health solutions.
Olivier Jérôme
Director, Engagement, partnerships and strategic initiatives, Catalis
For over 15 years, Olivier has led a variety of missions, all focused on patients, caregivers, researchers and healthcare professionals in the fields of reproductive medicine, obstetrics, oncology and rare diseases. Olivier also has a strong knowledge of the political environment and government affairs in health and innovation at both federal and provincial levels. Olivier has put this expertise to work for patients and their families to facilitate and accelerate access to innovation in healthcare. For more than 3 years, Olivier has contributed to the success of CATALIS' mission, piloting patient engagement programs and other strategic initiatives aimed at optimizing Quebec's clinical research ecosystem.
Ritu Banerjee
Assistant Deputy Minister, Office of Life Sciences and Biomanufacturing Readiness (OLSBR), Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada / Government of Canada
Ritu Banerjee recently joined Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada as the Assistant Deputy Minister, Office of Life Sciences and Biomanufacturing Readiness (OLSBR). Prior to that she was the Executive Director of the Results Division, Expenditure Management Sector at the Treasury Board Secretariat. Ritu has also worked at Employment and Social Development Canada on youth policy and has held various executive positions at Public Safety Canada, primarily working on national security policy issues. She started her career in the federal government at the Department of Justice. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, she has a Master of Arts in Political Science from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and a Law degree from the University of Ottawa. She has been a member of Ontario Bar since 2000.
Stephan Michel

With more than 20 years of experience in in Clinical Operations and Project Leadership, I am currently the Associate Prime Site Director in the Patients and Site Centric Solutions team for Canada.
From my first years as a CRA to my involvement in multicentric international studies as a Clinical Lead and Project Manager, I have worked in multiple therapeutic areas and study phases with a specific focus in the past few years on Central Nervous System trials (Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease).
I am currently focusing on high volume strategic partner alliances across the country. My primary responsibilities include the provision of adequate guidance, the development and implementation of IQVIA Partner Site strategic plans promoting growth and differentiation, and strategic support to sites. I am also supporting the implementation of non-project specific strategies (e.g., study start up processes, patient recruitment methodologies, strengthening and alignment of recruitment pipelines and leveraging innovation to advance clinical research), in addition to the identification of opportunities for Partner Sites to participate in studies that match site capabilities.

Terry Hawrysh
Cancer Survivor and Chair of the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research Patient Family Advisory Committee
Terry Hawrysh is a cancer survivor and proponent for superior outcomes and experiences in cancer patient care. His diagnosis, treatments and participation in two clinical trials led to an interest in cancer research and his involvement as patient partner and advisor in leading-edge research programs. He currently collaborates with several key institutions, organizations, and authorities where he applies his lived experience to help design and deliver research that cancer patient highly value.
Terry currently serves as Chair of the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research Patient Family Advisory Committee, where he supports patient engagement within their innovative translational research programs. He is also a member of Canada’s Drug Agency pCODR Expert Review Committee and provides patient advisory support to research programs at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Canada, BioCanRx, University of Toronto Centre for Sustainable Health Systems, Southlake Regional Hospital, Ontario Health and others.
Terry is a semi-retired professional engineer and holds degrees in engineering from the University of Toronto and Queen’s University, Kingston.
