COLORECTAL CANCER COMMUNITY CONFERENCE

 

This virtual conference brings together the nation’s colorectal cancer community: patients who are undergoing or have completed treatment, caregivers, family members, and healthcare professionals. Together, we will join forces to ENGAGE, EXCHANGE & EMPOWER.

This year’s conference was co-created with our patient and caregiver co-chairs to ensure that sessions and format respond to the needs of those touched by colorectal cancer and provide them with the necessary information to empower them throughout their journey.

Your Body After Cancer – Understanding Side Effects and Finding the Right Support
This session will address the short- and long-term physical effects of cancer and its treatment. Topics will include managing common side effects, understanding who to contact for specific concerns, and clarifying the roles of pharmacists, specialists, and allied health professionals. Discussions will include living with an ostomy, LARS, body image concerns, dermatologic and endocrine effects, physiotherapy, and harm reduction strategies. My name is Allison Deer. I am a proud Mohawk from Kahnawake, Quebec and a member of the wolf clan. With over 40 years of robust experience in community and economic development, I have built and sustained impactful partnerships at both regional and national levels.

I hold an MBA in Community Economic Development (CED) from Cape Breton University and currently serve as Senior Project Advisor at Bimaadzwin. I also actively serve as a Board Director for the Community Economic Development Employability Corporations of Quebec (CEDEC). Previously, I led as the Vice President (VP) of Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training, where I supported urban Indigenous peoples in the Greater Toronto Area and led as VP of the Cape Breton University Alumni Association for three terms.

I have had the privilege of delivering lectures on topics such as Indigenous community economic development, reconciliation, inclusion, and diversity. I am currently a part-time professor at Concordia University, teaching Community Economic Development at the School of Community and Public Affairs.

Ameerah Craigg is a Black woman whose work is informed by her various
historically marginalized intersections and identities. Ameerah completed her BA
in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and her BEd at York University. She has spent
time working in the mental health and addictions field as a counsellor and in the
community wellness field as a workshop facilitator and yoga instructor.  

She currently manages the Health Promotion and Community Engagement team at Black Health Alliance. Through

these experiences, Ameerah has been able to gain direct insight into the needs of
her communities and uses her harm reduction, trauma-informed,
feminist/womanist, and capacity-building frameworks to be a strong advocate,
supporter, and community organizer for those that need it the most.

Manager of Rehab and Exercise Oncology Program (REOP) at Hope & Cope 

Anh Thy Le Quang is a kinesiologist with a Master’s degree focused on surgical prehabilitation in colorectal cancer. She is the Manager of the Rehab and Exercise Oncology Program (REOP) at Hope & Cope and collaborates closely with clinical teams at the Jewish General Hospital and the Montreal General Hospital. Her work centers on movement, physical activity, and wellness across the cancer care continuum, including supporting individuals living with an ostomy.
She leads a multidisciplinary wellness team that offers a range of individual and group‑based activities, including exercise programs, yoga, tai chi, qigong, and other movement‑based wellness sessions. Anh Thy supports and guides individuals to move safely, build confidence, and reconnect with their bodies before and after treatment. She is passionate about making exercise accessible and empowering for those affected by colorectal cancer.

Dr Hamm established, and has grown the Clinical Trials Navigator program into a national program serving cancer patients and oncologists across Canada, now over 750 users. She partners with the Canadian Cancer Society, 3CTN and CCTG to improve equity to clinical trials access across Canada.

Dr. Daniel Santa Mina is a kinesiologist and clinical exercise physiologist. Dr. Santa Mina is a Professor at the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education and cross-appointed to the Faculty of Medicine in the Department of Surgery. At the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada, he is a Clinician Investigator in the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management, Director of Research and Programming for the Prehabilitation Program, and Research Lead for the Goodhope Exercise and Rehabilitation Program. Dr. Santa Mina’s research focus is exercise, rehabilitation, and prehabilitation in clinical populations. He has achieved over $21MM in grant funding and has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers. He recently launched PrehabRx, a free exercise-oncology and surgical prehabilitation service across Canada.

Dr. Laura Dawson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto and a staff radiation oncologist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Dr. Dawson is internationally recognized for her expertise in gastrointestinal cancers, especially hepatobiliary cancer and liver metastases, and in advancing the safe use of advanced radiation techniques such as SBRT, IGRT and adaptive radiation. She has led landmark clinical trials that have established SBRT as a treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal oligo-metastases. She also established low dose liver radiation therapy as an palliative treatment option to treat pain from hepatic cancer. She has published extensively and mentored hundreds of trainees and radiation oncologists from around the world. She is past ASTRO President, 2018 CARO Gordon Richards (Gold Medal) lecturer and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Science.

This role involves developing guidelines for primary care physicians and developing programs that will improve patient care throughout the cancer journey. She also has clinical experience providing routine primary care as a Family Physician.

Dr. Ron Burkes is Professor of Medicine at The University of Toronto and staff medical oncologist at Mount Sinai Hospital/Princess Margaret Cancer Centre/University Health Network in Toronto. He was on the medical oncology training committee for the University of Toronto for 23 years and the program director for the medical oncology training program from 1996 to 2005 during which time he introduced the academic half day, the longitudinal clinic experience, the annual medical oncology research day and the staff medical oncology outstanding teaching awards. He was also the director of the Clinical Teaching Unit at the PMCC from 1999 to 2005 and established the teaching curriculum for the internal medicine residents rotating through the PMCC. He is now the Medical Oncology Mentorship Facilitator for the Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine, University of Toronto.

He has won numerous teaching awards including Departmental and University wide awards on 19 occasions, the Anderson Award in Program Development and the Hasselback Teaching Award at PMCC. He has presented at many local, provincial, national and international meetings.

His research interests include lung and GI malignancies with a primary interest in lung, colorectal and gastric cancers. He has numerous publications including 136 peer reviewed, 154 non-peer reviewed and 2 book chapters.

Assistant Professor of Surgery and Principal Investigator, CHUM

I am a surgeon and scientist at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) and the CHUM Research Center, as of 2025. I completed my medical studies and residency in general surgery at the University of Montreal. I also hold a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences and an M.Sc. in Epidemiology. My doctoral research focused on the gut microbiota, the intestinal barrier, and colorectal carcinogenesis. I subsequently completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. My clinical practice focuses on the management of colorectal cancer, with a particular emphasis on advanced rectal cancer. My current research investigates the interplay between the gut microbiome, the immune system, and colorectal cancer, particularly in younger individuals. I am also interested in predictors of response to therapy and in the modulation of the tumor microenvironment to improve treatment response and patient outcomes.

Dr. Scott Adams is a physiologist and scientist with >18 years of experience delivering and testing the effects of exercise-based interventions in people living with and after cancer. Prior to founding Cancer Fatigue Services, Scott was a scientist at the University Health Network and the inaugural co-chair of the Cardio-Oncology Rehabilitation & Exercise working group of the International Cardio-Oncology Society. He completed his PhD at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta) and two postdoctoral fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, New York) and the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario).

 His research focused on understanding how to predict, identify, minimize, and treat some of the most common and debilitating side effects of cancer treatments like fatigue, and its major causes like cardiovascular dysfunction, skeletal muscle injuries and emotional distress.

 As a clinician and scientist, he has witnessed the power of exercise-based multi-disciplinary interventions to transform lives and restore hope for people living with and after cancer.

Dr Sharma was born in Toronto to parents who immigrated from Trinidad and Tobago, and he himself emigrated to Ireland where he met his wife, and the United Kingdom, before moving back to Canada. 

He is a General Practitioner in every sense of the word. His academic career started at McMaster University, where he studied Life science and Genetics, then Graduated from Medical School at University College Dublin, Ireland. He then trained in the field of Surgical Oncology with a specialist interest in Breast cancer, specifically triple negative breast cancer. He then pivoted to General Practice where he received further training in Gastroenterology and Palliative Care.

This all became very relevant after he was diagnosed with Colorectal cancer at the age of 41. With experience in Surgery, Oncology, Medicine, Palliative care, and Mental Health, this came with its advantages, but many disadvantages too. 

Dr Sharma life and experience makes him a unique patient advocate. He is passionate about healthcare locally with a national and global perspective. He is passionate about cancer care with a holistic perspective. He is passionate about healthcare advocacy with a professional and personal perspective.

Jason Abramovitch is an early age onset stage 3b colon cancer survivor who received his diagnosis and underwent treatments in Ottawa Ontario, amidst the COVID 19 pandemic in Nov 2020. In September 2024 Jay experienced a reoccurrence in his lung which was treated by SBRT. lives with his wife: Leslie and their daughter: Kira, in rural Ontario where he works as a community support worker for adults with disabilities living independently in the community. Jay is an active advocate for men and male caregivers experiencing cancer in through the organization “Man up to Cancer”: an online community providing emotional support and resources. Jay is also the Director of Man Up to Cancer's annual retreat , which is North Americas largest men's cancer retreat to date. Jay sits on several advisory committees , story tells , and leads peer support groups with a variety of organizations. Jays main goal is to give young patients a voice in a system that is not designed for them , and ensure nobody experiences cancer alone.

Kathryn White is a Cancer Coach, author, and wellness advocate dedicated to supporting individuals living with cancer. In March 2015, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer and spent that year undergoing extensive treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy. After completing treatment in December 2015, she began a deeply personal journey to reclaim her health and rebuild her life.
Through this experience, Kathryn developed a strong foundation in holistic healing, with a focus on nutrition and movement. She became a Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT200), integrating mindful movement into her own recovery and the work she now does with others. In 2021, driven by a passion to support those navigating a cancer diagnosis, she became a Cancer Coach.
Kathryn now works with individuals living with cancer, guiding them beyond survival toward a life of strength, resilience, and thriving. In recognition of her impact within the cancer community, she was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.
Now celebrating 11 years of living with a Stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis, Kathryn is the founder of Kathryn White Wellness, host of the Living to Thrive with Cancer podcast, and author of Living to Thrive: A Holistic Guide to Living with Cancer.
Her mission is to transform the narrative around colorectal and Stage 4 cancer by fostering awareness, hope, and the belief that a meaningful, thriving life is possible.
Outside of her professional work, Kathryn enjoys camping, hiking, paddling, reading, solving puzzles, and spending time with her husband, John, and their two adult sons.

Kina Leclair is a 40-year-old mother and stepmother of four from Ottawa, Ontario. She is an outgoing, outspoken, and driven professional. At 39 years old, as her career in leadership roles was soaring and her family was thriving, her life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Since her diagnosis, Kina has focused on whole-body healing, combining therapy, nutrition, fitness, spirituality, and connection with supportive communities, to navigate the challenges of cancer treatment and recovery. She shares her journey with honesty, intuition, and a commitment to living fully in the moment, hoping to inspire others facing serious health challenges.

In 2025, Kina underwent two major surgeries and 4 months of chemotherapy. In 2026, she had her first clear scan reading "No Evidence of Disease". She now navigates the blessings and challenges that come with living life in remission with a high chance of recurrence, and the side effects from the surgeries and chemotherapy. 

Kina’s new mission is to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, advocate for early detection, and support for young adults facing the diagnosis. Her story bridges professional leadership, personal resilience, and the transformative lessons learned from navigating life with cancer.

My name is Nadia Maffucci Di Rienzo, and I am a colorectal cancer survivor. To give you a little background information about me, I was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically Ulcerative Colitis (UC) in July 1997. In November 2022, I was diagnosed with early stage colorectal cancer. I was then scheduled for a total proctocolectomy in January 2023 and now I have a permanent ileostomy. I am a digital creator, and I manage a personal blog and Instagram account, Gutsy Girl Diaries to share my journey with IBD, Colorectal Cancer, and now life with an ostomy. It is my goal to use these platforms to advocate, educate, and break the stigma associated with invisible illnesses and disabilities.

Negar Razavilar is a Principal Health Economist. She works to support evidence-based healthcare decision-making through health economics and policy research. Her work focuses on generating insights that help inform healthcare policy and decision making.
In 2024, at the age of 39, Negar was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Her experience navigating diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship has given her a deeply personal perspective on the importance of early detection, timely diagnosis, and patient-centered care. Since then, she has become a passionate advocate for colorectal cancer awareness, particularly for younger adults who may not yet be included in routine screening pathways.
As both a health economist and colorectal cancer survivor, Negar brings a unique perspective that bridges lived experience with health system insight, helping to advance conversations around awareness, advocacy, and improving cancer care in Canada.

Paula Molnar is a social worker with over 10 years of experience in the healthcare system, including clinical coordination and program management in the public sector (CLSC). She holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) from McGill University.

As the Wellness Centre Program Coordinator at Hope & Cope, Paula develops and oversees support groups and programs for people living with cancer, including colorectal cancer. She provides direct psychosocial support across the cancer continuum. Her approach focuses on meeting individuals where they are at in their cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship by connecting them to services internally and in the community.

Dan Buchanan is Head of the Colorectal Oncogenomics Group in the Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Melbourne

 A/Prof Dan Buchanan is Head of the Colorectal Oncogenomics Group in the Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Melbourne, residing within the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.  He leads a diverse, multi-disciplinary research program aimed at improving the diagnosis of hereditary colorectal cancer and polyposis syndromes and determining the aetiology of early-onset colorectal cancer and polyposis using integrative multi-omic and molecular pathology epidemiology approaches applied to world-leading studies. He holds an honorary appointment within the Genomic Medicine and Familial Cancer Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital, contributing to a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and risk management of hereditary cancer and colonic polyposis. He holds leadership roles as an InSiGHT council member, co-PI of the Colon Cancer Family Registry, and co-chair of the ClinGen-InSiGHT CRC-Polyposis Variant Curation Expert Panel for the POLE and POLD1 genes.  He was awarded the Dean’s Research Excellence Award (Dame Kate Campbell Fellowship) in 2021 and again in 2026. He was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia Investigator EL2 Fellow (2021-2025).  He is committed to the translation of research to practice, evidenced by his role in the Australian eviQ Cancer Genetics Reference Committee tasked with providing national guidelines for testing and management of hereditary cancer syndromes.  He is the PI of the Genetics of Colonic Polyposis Study, and PI of the ANGELS study investigating the aetiology of early-onset colorectal cancer.

Sarah Cleyn is an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with the The Ottawa Hospital Champlain Regional Cancer Program, specializing in adolescent and young adult (AYA) oncology care. She leads and contributes to innovative, patient‑centred programs that improve access, quality, and experience across the cancer continuum. Sarah’s work focuses on early needs assessment, survivorship planning, and the integration of multidisciplinary and community‑based supports to better meet the complex needs of AYA patients.
With a strong interest in quality improvement and system transformation, Sarah is actively involved in clinical workflow optimization, electronic health record innovation, and program evaluation. She collaborates closely with regional and provincial partners to advance equitable, evidence‑informed cancer care. Passionate about translating data into meaningful clinical action, Sarah is committed to empowering patients, supporting care teams, and driving sustainable improvements within healthcare.

Diagnosed last year at age 35 with Stage 3B colon cancer, Zed has recently entered the surveillance phase of his cancer journey, an experience that has profoundly shaped his perspective on health, identity, resilience, and the often unseen psychosocial impact of cancer. As someone who navigated treatment while continuing to lead a company and show up for life, Zed brings a candid and deeply personal voice to conversations around the physical, emotional, and mental health realities of cancer.
