Tourism-heavy rural economies face a set of pressures to secure affordable housing that hinge on two roughly parallel housing markets: housing to allow tourists to visit and contribute to the tourism-based economies and housing that allows workers in tourism-related jobs to live close to their workplaces. Whether the solution rests in employer-based housing, affordability protections, increasing modest home supply or something else altogether depends on local conditions, stakeholder commitment and long-term planning.
